The Eastern Oregon Museum in Haines, on the Old Oregon Trail

We in Haines are proud of our museum and the many volunteers who work so hard to make it successful. Several items displayed here in the Haines Steak House are on loan from the museum's vast collection. There are over 10,000 artifacts of nostalgia on display in the museum. Like Grandma's attic, the museum contains a outstanding collection of household, mining and pioneer artifacts. On the grounds is the old Union Pacific Depot, built in the 1880's and donated when the railroad discontinued stops at Haines in 1962.There is also a country-old polar tree from Washington Gulch with a well preserved scythe grown into where a forgetful harvesterhung it before the turn of the century. The logging and mining display include equipment and tools , with photographs of logging camps and horses logging operations, mining equipment, ore samples, agate and thunder egg collections. There is also a cowboy memorabilia collection, housewares and period clothing, antique dolls and toys, a one-room schoolhouse complete with furniture and reading materials and a carriage wing with a fine collection of horse-drawn vehicles. The museum also maintains historic archives that are available to the public. |
